“Sikkim Imposes Rs 5,000 Fine for Feeding Monkeys, Aims to Curb Human-Monkey Conflict”
The Forest and Environment Department, Government of Sikkim, has issued a striking public notice, announcing fines of Rs 5,000 for feeding monkeys.
The move comes in response to the growing concern of human-monkey conflict and aims to ensure harmony between humans and wildlife. The notice emphasizes the protected status of the Monkey (Macaque species) under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
Feeding monkeys and improper disposal of food waste are both deemed offences under the notice. The intention is to raise public awareness and discourage such activities, thereby fostering an environment that’s safe for all.
The rising cases of human-monkey conflict prompted this step to maintain public health and safety while preserving wildlife.
